Artist-in-Residence at the New Pacific Studio, Vallejo, California, August to November, 2022
I was often asked, "What kind of art do you do?" So, I decided to answer the question by going back to the basics, pure colors, and simple shapes. I blurred the line between objective and non-objective images, inorganic and geometric shapes but didn't want them to be totally non-representational. A rectangle is not just an abstract shape but can suggest a color block; a black line is not just a line but perhaps a gash on the surface; colored stripes are not just abstract shapes but a flag or a rainbow. To push the symbols further, color blocks suggest a castle or a cityscape; a line can be a scar in our national psyche; a blank sheet of paper can invite infinite possibilities.
